Litter-Robot for Large Cats
If you have a large cat, then you must be used to cat accessories being too small for your kitty. From cat beds to cat scratchers to cat carriers, everything must be proportional to the size of your cat to fit properly. The same goes for the Litter-Robot automatic self-cleaning litter box. While it might sound like a very useful tool that would help you get rid of scooping for good, you have to check if it is a good fit for your cat physically.
Size Matters
Wondering if the Litter-Robot 3 works with large cats? Litter-Robot says cats up to 25 lbs can use the Litter-Robot. My cats are large breed Ragdoll cats and weigh around 14 lbs – they are long cats too. Sometimes the weight of a cat doesn’t tell the full story, so that’s why I say they are long.
Here’s what Litter-Robot says, “It can depend on the cat but there are many 25+ lb cats using the Litter-Robot 3 comfortably. To give you a better idea of the space, inside the globe is 15”-17”H (depending on litter level) x 20”W x 20”D.”
But let’s take a closer look. Watch Trigg inside the Litter-Robot in this video! You can see him moving around inside the Litter-Robot, which provides about as much space as a regular litter box. You can also see him waiting near the robot cat litter box to hear it cycle. He’s very interested in that part.

How the Litter-Robot Works
The Litter-Robot big cat litter box has a different shape than traditional litter boxes. It is a large sphere with a couple of steps leading to it. The cat climbs the steps and goes inside the Litter-Robot and uses it just like a regular litter box. It has kitty litter inside and that part happens the traditional way. Keep in mind that you have to use clumping kitty litter for the Litter-Robot to work.
When the cat goes inside, the Litter-Robot detects its presence because it can measure its weight. Once the cat is inside, you will see a small red light come up, which means that the Litter-Robot will not cycle while the cat is inside. Once the cat exists the globe part of the Litter-Robot, it detects that because the weight inside changes again and a blue light is turned on as it begins its cycle. These are the steps of the cycle:
- Step 1 – The globe where the kitty litter with the clumps is begins to rotate, making the litter move with it.
- Step 2 – The kitty litter reaches a sieve portion, which filters the litter. Only the clean litter goes through it, while the clumps stay on the sieve.
- Step 3 – As the globe keeps spinning, the clumps fall down to the drawer located under the globe, where they will be stored.
- Step 4 – At the end of the cycle, the clean litter will come back through the sieve. With the clean litter in place, the cat can come back anytime to use the Litter-Robot litter box.
- Step 5 – When the Litter-Robot’s drawer is full, all you have to do is open it and take out the sack with the clumps and poop and throw it away. Then, you put in a new sack and the Litter-Robot is ready for use.
The Litter-Robot vs. Traditional Litter Boxes
The Litter-Robot is an automatic litter box, which means that it will do all the scooping in your place. All you have to do is empty the clump drawer about once a week and you are done. No more smells, no more clumps!
Compared to a traditional litter box, the process is more hygienic, and even more economic in the long run because you will save a lot on kitty litter. When you scoop the litter out yourself, you almost always throw out some clean litter in the process. But when this is done automatically, only the clumps go through the sieve.
Another benefit brought by the Litter-Robot is that your cat will have clean litter after every single use. Not only is this safer for the cat, but it also means that it won’t have dirty paws anymore when it exits the litter box.
If you have more than one cat in your home, then you have to get several litter boxes to cover all of them. The rule for determining the number of traditional litter boxes that you need is the number of cats in your home plus one. That’s not the case with the Litter-Robot. Since it cleans the litter after every single use, up to four cats can use it. The only thing you have to do is clean the clump drawer more frequently.
And there’s more! The Litter-Robot has some other useful features that make it far superior to any traditional litter box. It has an app that you can use to track the activity of the Litter-Robot. It will notify you when the drawer is full and it will tell you when and how many times it was used and by which cat, if have more because it detects the different weight.
Moreover, you can use the app to monitor your cat’s bathroom behavior, which is extremely useful to keep track of its health. It’s easy to notice if your cat hasn’t used the litter box, which could signal constipation or urinary obstructions, and it’s also easy to find out if it’s been using it more than usual, which could signal urinary infections, diarrhea, or even systemic diseases like diabetes.

Hi, I’m Jenny Dean, creator of Floppycats! Ever since my Aunt got the first Ragdoll cat in our family, I have loved the breed. Inspired by my childhood Ragdoll cat, Rags, I created Floppycats to connect, share and inspire other Ragdoll cat lovers around the world,
Love the idea but after watching a 14# cat use it I don’t think our 22#, 42” long Maine Coon would not fit. He needs a medium dog harness so he’s a big boy. Appreciate the video a lot of money to spend and not have my cat fit.
You’re welcome – it definitely depends on the size of the cat – a reader with Maine Coons shared her experience with the Litter Robot too.
TYSVM for this super pawesome & fabulous LR info, Jenny honey! Well done! Really great info! 🙂 <3
Big hugs & lots of love & purrs!
