Our “Ask US Anything” is a series of posts on the site where I share the questions/concerns/ideas that readers have sent in and then the responses from our readers about those questions/concerns/ideas.

Ragdoll Cat Cloudy Eye Problem

A reader is concerned about their 10-month-old Ragdoll cat, who keeps getting a cloudy film over one eye at a time. The film clears up quickly on its own, but the cat keeps getting it in different eyes.

Here’s what other Ragdoll owners shared:

  • Uveitis: One person suggests it might be uveitis, an inflammatory eye condition treatable with medication. However, the vet didn’t seem to think this was the case because the cat shows no discomfort with light or tearing.
  • Hyphema: Another suggests it could be hyphema, which is blood in the eye, but this is usually a symptom of another illness. They recommend a full blood panel at the vet.
  • Scratch: Someone else shared their Ragdoll had a similar issue, and the vet thought it scratched its eye. The cloudiness cleared up in a week.

Overall, the responses offer possibilities but no definitive answer. It’s best for the reader to take their cat back to the vet for further evaluation.

Ragdoll Cat Shedding A Lot and Sneezing

The reader adopted a 1.5-year-old cat in December and is concerned about hair loss. The cat seems happy but loses a lot of hair while petting and wrestling with another cat. They’re wondering if this hair loss is normal or a cause for concern.

Possible Causes of Hair Loss in Cats:

  • Stress: Playful wrestling can sometimes cause minor hair loss, especially if the cats are roughhousing a lot.
  • Allergies: Food allergies, environmental allergies, or flea allergies can cause itching and excessive scratching, leading to hair loss.
  • Fleas: Even a small flea infestation can cause significant itching and hair loss.
  • Ringworm: This fungal infection can cause circular patches of hair loss.
  • Hormonal imbalances: In some cases, hormonal issues can contribute to excessive shedding.
  • Underlying medical conditions: Some medical conditions like hyperthyroidism or kidney disease can also cause hair loss.

What to Do:

  • Schedule a vet visit: The best course of action is to schedule a vet appointment. The vet can examine the cat, rule out any underlying medical conditions, and recommend appropriate treatment.
  • Observe the cat closely: Monitor the cat’s behavior for any other signs of distress, such as excessive scratching, licking, or lethargy.

Note: It’s important to address hair loss promptly to prevent further complications and ensure the cat’s overall health and well-being.

Ragdoll Cat Grooming Help

Kat wrote in, “Suggestion for a blog: since spring is coming and the furbabies will be shedding, I was hoping you’d do a blog or a groomer you know can do a guest-blog on ragdoll-specific hair cuts since their hair is more bunny-like. Lion cuts? Comb cuts? Brush outs? What are others’ experiences on taking their ragdoll to the groomer? I am a first-time Ragdoll owner, and I do not want him to overheat in the spring/summer, so any suggestions/information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Grooming is one of the subjects I find difficult to cover – not only because I do the very basics (as that’s what I think is needed for my cats), but also because there are so many factors that I don’t know about someone else’s cat, so I can’t just make a blanket statement. I do not know any groomers who are good or knowledgeable enough to do a guest post. Long ago, this one was done. I posted Kat’s question about cat grooming help on Facebook to see what others had to say.
