Many of you who follow us on our social media channels, know how much I am still enjoying our Litter Robot Open Air (see our newest video below to see what I mean) or you can read our Litter Robot Open Air review too.
Many of you have also asked how you might save on the Litter Robot Open Air. One of the great ways to save money on a Litter-Robot is to grab one of the refurbished ones on their website.
Litter-Robot calls them “reconditioned” and lists them under the “Reconditioned” tab on their website, see the screenshot below to see what I mean.
But, you may be wondering what the re-conditioning means and if there is a warranty on the product and more – Litter Robot explains it all on their website, but here’s a quick run down:
- In general, reconditioned Litter-Robots purchased through the manufacturer are those that have been returned under their 90-day return policy.
- All Litter Robots that are available for purchase through the reconditioned tab have been tested to make sure they meet Litter-Robot’s original factory specifications.
- Being able to re-sell a reconditioned unit, Litter-Robot is able to reduce their environmental impact – they don’t have to throw it away.
- While a reconditioned unit gets a thorough cleaning, it is a used unit and therefore could have small cosmetic defects or other evidence of prior use. If any of those would turn you off, Litter-Robot suggests that you purchased a new unit instead.
- Warranty on Litter Robot Reconditioned Units – same 18 month warranty that the new ones come with! (you also have the option to purchase 18 more months for a total of a 3-year warranty for $49.99)

Would you buy a refurbished Litter Robot? Why or why not?
Hi, I’m Jenny Dean, creator of Floppycats! Ever since my Aunt got the first Ragdoll cat in our family, I have loved the breed. Inspired by my childhood Ragdoll cat, Rags, I created Floppycats to connect, share and inspire other Ragdoll cat lovers around the world,
I think refurbished is a great idea when available. They are well made enough I think refurbished would be reliable. However, what I did was buy through Bed Bath and Beyond using a 20% coupon. That was a huge help in bringing down the price on a new unit.
Yes, so smart and you got that deal before they stopped selling it through Bed, Bath and Beyond.
HI, Jenny! I am really considering buying this new litter box….even clicked on the link to save $25 but I don’t think the link is working because it still showed $449. I have 1 14 pound Ragdoll and a kitten on the way. I read about using the unit as a “semi-automatic” unit until our kitten reaches 5 pounds…might just wait until our kitten is 5 pounds before ordering it.
I know you recommend 1 more litter box than cats per floor and we have 1 floor. Really would want this to be our only litter box…are you thinking of trying it as your only litter box?
Hi Kim,
Thank you for reaching out.
I have asked Litter-Robot to respond to your inquiry. I am unsure about the $25 off thing – so I went through the link (like you would) and discovered you have to click on “add to cart” and then go to the cart. Once in the cart, you’ll scroll down to the checkout and see the “Promotion Discount” – $25.
No, I would never have one litterbox for my two cats. My parents had a lot of peeing outside of the box problems with Rags and their two cats when they refused to have more litter boxes – I NEVER want that problem. So my cats will always have a lot of options. Do I think this could be their only litterbox? Potentially, but I certainly am not going to try and find out!
Thanks,
Jenny
Hi Kim,
Jenny’s test was right on – you will see the discount in your shopping cart.
One benefit of using a Litter-Robot in semi-automatic mode when the kitten is too light for automatic mode is that they will not have any transition period switching from standard tray to Litter-Robot later. Most cats do make the transition quite easily but it is something to consider.
As for the number of cats per Litter-Robot, it will depend on your cats use, household, etc. Here is a handy tool to use as a general guide: https://www.litter-robot.com/how-many-units-for-your-home.html
Congratulations on your soon-to-arrive Kitten!
Thanks,
Litter-Robot
Great post, Jenny! Had no idea they had refurbished ones available. Very interesting!! Thanks!
Big hugs!
