Does Your Cat Like Dirt Baths?

In college, I lived with a cat who liked dirt baths.  We were in New Mexico, so dirt was common with the high desert weather.  I think it was then that I looked up the reason why cats take dirt baths and instinctively it is to rid themselves of their scent, so they can be more effective predators. My Ragdoll Cat, Trigg, loves dirt baths.  Charlie only takes them sometimes, but Trigg takes them pretty regularly, when we have dry dirt – we live in the midwestern United States – it’s a pretty humid environment.

Of course, usually, your kitty has to have access to the outdoors in order to take a dirt bath.  So, does your kitty take dirt baths?

I agree with Sweet Teresa…such a cute video!!! Miss Pink Sugarbelle has never really been outside (except when we carried her to and from the car after picking her up from her wonderful breeder). However, she does lurve to take a “dirt bath” in a clean litterbox full of clean litter. I completely wash both of her litterboxes every month and dump all the old litter in the trash and fill both boxes with new, fresh litter. She will roll around in the fresh litter doing something very similar to a “dirt bath.” It’s so hilarious and I lurve to watch her do that. Now, I understand why she does it.

Thanks for the great info, Jenny!

    Big hugs!

    Patti & Miss Pink Sugarbelle 🙂 <3

What a cute video! None of ours go outside. When Mari was in transition to become an indoor cat after she just appeared here, don’t remember ever seeing her do that. She was so traumatized being outside without any claws, don’t think that she acted like a normal cat would. She was so fearful that she was going to be the prey of another animal, she was never relaxed until she came inside and began to finally feel safe.♥♥♥

Awww, bless your heart Teresa for all the lurve and compassion you have for your kittehs! Your success with Miss Mariposa is AMAZING! Poor thing being out there in the elements without any defense except speed and her teeth. Poor thing. So glad she wandered into your life and found her true forever home!!! I know she’s still struggling with being sick right now. I hope she feels better real soon, honey!! Big hugs & lots of love!!! <3 <3 <3
