Sleepypod Travel Pet Carriers: Serious Travel Safely with Your Cat

Sleepypod Mobile Pet BedDid you know that the majority of pet travel carriers on the market would kill your cat instantly if you got into a car crash?  I didn’t really understand that little bit of information until I was on the phone with a PR rep for a cat manufacturer asking her if we could do a giveaway for a pet travel carrier.  She told me that we could, but that we would have to be “careful” about the terminology used, i.e., pet travel carrier vs. pet carrier, due to the fact that the carrier had not passed critical crash testing guidelines.  WHOA.

All of a sudden my interest in companies that make pet travel carriers that were not only useful, but also safe for our pets became a lot more important.

A few days ago, Sleepypod announced that the Center for Pet Safety awarded top honors to every Sleepypod pet carrier in the research and advocacy organization’s new carrier certification program. 5 Star Crash Test Ratings were awarded to the Sleepypod with PPRS Handilock, the Sleepypod Mini with PPRS Handilock, and the Sleepypod Atom. The Sleepypod Air pet carrier earned a 4 Star Crash Test Rating.

The Center for Pet Safety’s Certification Program is the first formal crash test rating system for carriers and other pet safety restraint products. Manufacturer participation in the program is voluntary for the purpose of obtaining independent evaluation. The test protocol, which is a result of the 2015 Carrier Crashworthiness Study conducted by Center for Pet Safety and sponsored by Subaru of America, outlines a consistent test methodology and evaluation program to ensure pet carriers offer crash protection. Additional information about the Center for Pet Safety and its Certification Program may be found at

“Sleepypod carriers have transformed how pet owners travel with their pets,” says lead product designer and Sleepypod co-founder, Michael Leung. “As more pet owners take their pets with them on vacation, errands, and to work, Sleepypod carriers offer ease of use, maximum comfort, and proven safety when traveling in cars.”

These have been on my girls’ wish lists for many years. I just watched the crash test for the SleepyPod and it made me shudder thinking that my precious angels could be hurt or even killed if we were ever in an accident. The 30 MPH test is hardly any speed at all and it really gave that carrier a jolt. Am not sure that the carriers I have right now wouldn’t hold up because they seem very well made and strong. They are strapped in with the seatbelt just as the Sleeppod is.

Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention Jenny. I would go for the RED on #3, but have always favored the #1 because it can be used inside as a bed. Think that is another great feature for multipurposes!

While we are on the SleepyPod subject (hope they are reading this), sure do wish they would bring back the CraterDot. Would buy several of them in a heartbeat. Always thought that those were the coolest things, but they stopped selling them before we could snag even one. That’s OK, maybe some day they will come out again.
    Thanks so much!♥♥♥

Thank you so much for this very important information, Jenny! I have had the Sleepypod carrier on my Kitteh Wish List since your initial review. (I’ve now got number 3, due to Miss PSB’s size, in Robin’s Egg Blue, in my Amazon Wish List.) Now, I know I really need to get one as soon as I can. A nice discount code for Floppycatters would be so lurvely!!! Thanks for checking on that!!!

    Big hugs!

    Patti & Miss Pink Sugarbelle 🙂 <3

The Sleepypod is on my wishlist!

I wish Sleepypod had offered a discount or something for Floppycats readers – I would have been all over that!!

There’s a typo in the first paragraph but please don’t change it because it’s hilarious (although it doesn’t take much to make me laugh!):

“…until I was on the phone with a PR rep for a cat manufacturer”

Cat robots are taking over the world!!

I don’t comment much anymore but I definitely keep up and use Floppycats as a resource so a quick thank you for all of your hard work Jenny!

    • Jenny says:

wait, what’s the typo? i read it three times and don’t see it.

i am glad you’re still around!

i thought sleepypod didn’t sell direct (only through retailers), but i see they do sell direct. so i will reach out and ask about a coupon code.

      • Christy says:

You were on the phone with someone from “a cat manufacturer” – a company that manufacturers cats?! That was the reason for the reference about cat robots!!

They also apparently sell on Amazon!!! (check out the price – HAHAHA!):

A coupon would be fantastic! When I order for Prossimo, I’m also going to get the ClickIt seatbelt for dogs. I have one now but I like the ClickIt’s testing results more than the one I have.

        • Jenny says:

ah ha…a cat product manufacturer…still don’t see it as a typo, just the lingo in the industry….but I can see how that would sound funny, especially if English isn’t your first language.

I could use your writing skills though – you are a much better writer!

Yes, they do sell on Amazon – I have Amazon links in the article.

        • Patti Johnson says:

          Hi, Christy:

I hope at that price on Amazon that it comes with a cat robot inside! lol *wink*

          Big hugs!

          Patti & Miss Pink Sugarbelle 🙂 <3

Thanks for featuring this, Jenny. I would be a customer for this carrier, and it would work for the smaller one of my Rags, George at 13 lbs., but my beautiful girl Annie is almost 20 lbs. Do you think it would work for her?

    • Jenny says:

Heard back from Sleepypod re: coupon code:

“We usually only provide discounts a couple of times a year. Discounts on the Sleepypod web site will compete with the stores that sell the Sleepypod products.

There is a discount scheduled in the near future. Information will be posted on Sleepypod social media.”

      • Patti Johnson says:

Well, bummer… Oh well, guess I’ll check have to keep checking their website every now and then. Thanks for getting us this info, Jenny!!!! 🙂 <3

        • Jenny says:

Agreed. I was not pleased that it wasn’t easier for the consumer to be alerted about it – through an email newsletter, for example. I know as a consumer, I don’t actively go looking every week on a manufacturer’s FB page, for example.

          • Patti Johnson says:

Exactly. I would hope they do that via a newsletter at least like other sites who advertise sales. Going to go to their website and see if I can sign up for a newsletter. 🙂 <3
