In this week’s Ragdoll of the Week, a reader shares their beautiful Ragdoll rescue story about a special cat named Truffles, who proved that adopting an older cat can bring years of joy and adventure.
My precious kitty came into my life in the spring of 2013 at almost two years old; she was born in the spring of 2011. I had three cats before her: a white, long-haired Himalayan and two tabby cats, one named Toto and one named Dorothy. When my last cat passed after 16 years, I did some research on what I was looking for in my next little furry friend. I decided on a Ragdoll cat. I thought they were beautiful, but I did not think I could afford one.
I did not know of any Ragdoll breeders, so I searched pet stores, talked to people, and visited a shelter, but no Ragdoll was to be found. Then one day, someone told me about a rescue group that had “purebred” in its title. I emailed the owner, and she said they had never seen a Ragdoll come through their doors. I felt it was hopeless and that I would never have a Ragdoll cat. I would have been willing to pay a good breeder for one if I had known where one was.
The Search and Thoughts on Adopting an Older Ragdoll Cat
Blessings were on my side, as the purebred rescue owner contacted me the very next day and said two Ragdolls, aged 14 and 16, had just come in. If they had been a little younger, I would have taken them in a heartbeat; however, I had just lost my 16-year-old tabby and wanted a long-term, special furry friend that I would not lose so soon. I told the rescue owner I was willing to take an older cat—maybe six or seven years old—but I was afraid of falling in love with a 16-year-old and having to go through another loss soon after adopting. The rescue owner said she understood and would keep her eyes open for a possible Ragdoll coming through her doors in the future. She had me fill out an application just in case, explaining that a Ragdoll would go quickly and it was best to have a completed application ready.
A Perfect Ragdoll Rescue Story Begins
I was very blessed, as that same week the owner of the rescue group called me again. Someone had contacted her wanting to rehome their purebred Ragdolls. For now, they were inquiring about rehoming their almost two-year-old Ragdoll due to family allergies. I was shown a picture of the most beautiful Ragdoll in the world, and I most definitely wanted her. I contacted the owner, we met, and we decided to use the rescue group as our guide to do things the right way in adopting this beautiful cat.
I named her Truffles. She was a joy every day and was so curious. She loved learning about life, and wand toys were her favorite. I was amazed at how high she could jump. I live in a condominium. When I opened my front door, it led into the main hallway, which Truffles loved to come out into. She would lay on her back to have me give her belly rubs, and then she would walk down the hall like she owned the place. I would follow behind her as she explored. It was very secure and safe as long as I stayed with her. We would only be in the hall for a few minutes, and then she would sprint down the hall. She was a very fast runner.
Exploring the World Together
Because I live in a condo, I wanted Truffles to see the outside world, so she came with me to many places. I have a large Pet Gear stroller, and we explored the world together. We would go to the store and on many trails. We went to the waterfront, Pike Place Market, the zoo, the mall, and the Space Needle at the Seattle Center. We even went to street fairs and, once, to a Pet-A-Palooza. One of our favorite things to do was walk around Green Lake. It is a popular place where people walk, skate, or jog, usually with or without a dog. Truffles would sit up, looking out at the birds, trees, the lake, and all the people we passed along the way. Many times, people would pass, stop, turn around, smile, and say, “Hey, that’s a cat!” They would want to take her picture and ask me how I got her to ride in a stroller. People frequently marveled at her beauty. It was such a joy to take her places.
The Blessing of the Animals
Every fall, our church would hold a blessing of the animals, and I took Truffles every year for her blessing. I will always remember that first Sunday in 2013 when I took her to church. That year, the animals all walked down the aisle to the altar together. I was totally shocked at Truffles’ courage; she led a pack of dogs, big and small, all the way to the altar. I had brought her stroller, thinking she would feel more comfortable staying in it through the blessing ceremony, but no—she had lots of confidence in herself.
Saying Goodbye After 13 Beautiful Years
As the years went on, she loved to snuggle. She considered everyone who would pet her or give her tummy rubs a friend. All my family and friends adored her.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. My sweet, gentle, kind, smart, and confident kitty was called home to heaven on May 9, 2026. She passed away due to kidney failure at 15 years old. I will miss her forever and will think of her often. I will forever feel blessed that I had her in my life for the last 13 years of her 15 years on this earth.
Thank you for letting me share the story of my dear, sweet Truffles.
