Ragdoll Cat Video: 12-Year Old Ragdoll Cats Meet German Shepherd Puppy

For those of you who follow us on our social media channels, you already know my parents got a German Shepherd puppy last Sunday, May 21, 2017.  His name is Parker.  As I told my mom, “I am not excited you got a puppy – but I am super impressed by him!”  I really am not much of a dog person – I respect them – but don’t want them like I do cats.  This little guy has been amazing so far.

This compilation video is basically all the little videos I have posted on our Facebook page of the first 24 hours of my parents 12-year old Ragdoll cats interacting with their new 8-week old German Shepherd puppy, Parker, for the first time. Enjoy!

I took this video yesterday – can’t believe we’re 5 days in and they are acting this well together!

After reading your comment, I’m thinking you may be right. I guess I was just remembering reading somewhere that Ragdolls get along well with dogs.

Thanks so much for sharing these precious moments with little Parker getting to know Caymus and Murphy! He is just adorable. Love those ears! Have always wanted a GS, but never had one, but my daughter does and she is so sweet and smart. Had Aussies though and they were amazing too! That breeder did a great job getting Parker to be so respectful of the kitties and know they will get along wonderfully in the future.
That is so funny about your Mom saying you have too much cat hair on your shirt. It used to bother me when people would say that to me until I thought about it a little differently. Now when I hear someone saying that a person has cat hair all over them, I think, ” it just shows they are a really kind person (because they love cats).” My husband started wanting his clothes washed separately after 30 years because of “too much cat hair on his clothes.” What? Pfft! If that happens, he knows where the machine is and how it works! Hehe!♥♥♥♥

I enjoyed watching these videos very much. Did you say that Camus and Murphy had lived with dogs previously? Is that why they accepted this puppy so quickly?

Glad you enjoyed the videos. Yes, Caymus and Murphy came home as kittens to a German Shepherd and a 15-year old Ragdoll. When they were 2 years old, my parents got another German Shepherd. When they were 9 or 10 years old, my mom had my brother’s German Shepherd for 8 months. So they have been around 3 GSDs – this is their second puppy. But the puppy is also very impressive.

I think also that the perhaps Ragdoll personalities and this smart German Shepard made this work. My daughter tried to bring in a German Shepard puppy into her home with one adult cat and one 8 month old kitten. Neither of them were Ragdolls. The puppy was getting scratched by the kitten and the puppy was chasing both cats. My daughter had to finally sell the puppy. Hope you post more of these three later.

Hi Ruth, I think it is probably Caymus and Murphy’s experience with GSDs already. They are soon to be 13-years old and are well-versed in GSD. I also think it was the breeder’s exposure of the pup to her own cats – so he learned from a newborn that cats weren’t toys or playmates. Lots of factors went into this working. I am sorry your daughter had to rehome the puppy. My parents’ Napa, who died 15 months ago, chased Caymus when she was a puppy. Caymus was only 2 and got a UTI from the stress. So it really has nothing to do with them being Ragdolls in my opinion.

Such beautiful videos, Jenny! Really enjoyed them! Parker is AMAZING! Such smart puppy! It’s like he intuitively knows to give them their space and just be very non-threatening to them. (German Shepherds are The Smartest Dogs Ever! Scary smart and so quick to learn!) I think they will have a great relationship with each other moving forward as Parker gets bigger. Can’t wait to see the videos of when Charlie & Trigg meet Parker! 🙂 <3

NOTE: My maternal grandmother lurved German Shepherds so much. She bred them for awhile and always had three or four on her property in Florida. Every time we'd come to visit she would take time to bring each of the dogs up to the house to introduce us to them so they knew we were part of her family. After that they would romp and play with us like old friends. Have a special place in my heart for German Shepherds. 🙂 <3

Big hugs & lots of love!
