Pebbles and Spencer – Ragdoll Cats of the Week

Pebbles and Spencer - Ragdolls of the Week 1 My Mom had recently died, and she had always wanted a Ragdoll but never had one. One Sunday afternoon I was missing Mom. I picked up my laptop and Googled Ragdoll Breeders Central Florida. I found a breeder a few miles from home. Her website was beautiful. At the bottom of the front page were magical words to me “ask me about my retirees”. I told my husband. We both prefer to adopt adults, cats and dogs. My husband said to go ahead and contact the breeder if I wanted to. At the time we had a wonderful golden retriever and a very docile cat named Cleo.

Pebbles and Spencer - Ragdolls of the Week 3I emailed the breeder through her website. We emailed back and forth for two weeks. She really questioned me. Finally she invited us over to meet Pebbles. She was, at that time, 5 years old, a retired show cat and now a breeder girl who was no longer able to get pregnant.

We were thrilled to adopt Pebbles. My husband retired from 37 years of teaching high school shortly bringing Pebbles home. Since I was still working full time guess who she bonded with? During my husband’s first year of retirement he read 52 books, every single one with Pebbles sitting with him while he rubbed her neck! My self-professed “dog lover” fell hard! Pebbie is totally his cat; she is beyond loyal to him. He says he is not a cat lover he is a Ragdoll lover!! Pebbie has totally spoiled us. I grew up with up with cats, but never knew any cats like Pebbie. She is the most loving, sweetest, calmest, best mannered and of course so beautiful.

Pebbles and Spencer - Ragdolls of the Week 3Years later when our Ms Cleo died, after days of me crying my husband asked me if I would like to get another Ragdoll? Absolutely!! First thing I did was look for the breeder’s website where I got Pebbles. Much to our disappointment the site was shut down. So I began a new search. I found Spencer nearby. He was 14 months and already fixed. The breeder told us Spencer loves the ladies. Since he was fixed it’s not that kind of love! She said he loves to snuggle with the girl kitties. Well, Pebbles was not so thrilled, she swatted him and she moved! My husband and I joked that that Pebbles thought “oh no, I have had enough babies you just keep your distance”. Poor Spencer never gives up hope. They are older now, Pebbles is 13 Spencer is 5 and now Pebbles tolerates him lying close to her, snuggling…not quite.

Pebbles and Spencer - Ragdolls of the Week 3Spencer is our family clown. What a character. He really keeps up laughing, and he has the most serious face. He loves to jump up in the air to catch paper wads my husband throws at him. He amazes us at how high he can jump.

Several months ago I had total knee replacement surgery. I had two of the most devoted “Ragdoll nurses”. They stayed right with me.

My husband and I cannot imagine ourselves without our Ragdolls. Whoever heard of cats who mind? If we say “no” they stop what they are doing. They come when they are called. They are so smart, so affectionate, so calm, so loving, not to mention beautiful, such good cats. We truly are Ragdoll fans.

Great story and gorgeous cats! I love the photo of your husband with the kitties draped over him — it is the cutest thing ever. I will be smiling all night when I think of it!

Spencer and Pebbles are beautiful cats. We understand how these men who are dog lovers can really bond with these amazing cats. As retirees we can understand how they can make the “golden years” even better. Chris Chocallo Sarasota FL

I love this story! We got our first boy Nikolai after me begging my husband for two years for a Ragdoll. He finally relented, under the condition “it will be your cat! I am a DOG LOVER. When we brought 12 week-old Nik home, from a great breeder in Poteet OK. Nikolai immediately bonded with our 10 year old German Shepherd Duchess. Duchess never having a litter of her own had a puppy! Ken, big dog, and precious kitten became a three some for ever more. We lost our beloved Duchess winter 2013. Ken and Nik became glued at the ankles. Nothing cuter then a floppy cat playing fetch, or watching football at his Daddies feet. We got Nikolai his 1/2 brother in 2014 Beauregard Rutledge. Now we have two precious “good dogs”(Daddies words NOT mine) in the house. Like the kitty-Daddy above, there is nothing like a Ragdoll to make you fall in love forever. There is some truth in why they are known as puppy cats, ask Nikolai or Beau, they might agree, just make sure you don’t take their nerf balls!

What gorgeous felines!! I don’t know who is who, but they do look similar enough to be thought of as siblings. Love the photo of hubby napping with the two kitties. I would hazard a guess that Pebbles is the one on his chest sleeping closest to him. Spencer looks like he is holding on for dear life and has adjusted his body to fit right in the ridge of his legs. Hilarious! Enjoy and thanks for sharing your lovely story. I always adopt older kitties. Always.

  6. Love the picture of the “dog lover” with his nap buddies- so cute! Pebbles and Spencer are both beauties. I love the bi-color pattern of Ragdolls! Thanks for sharing their stories.
