Felix Katnip Tree Company Scratching Beam Product Review: For Kitties That Like Scratching on Stairs

UPDATE! May 8, 2018

We have reviewed a lot of cat products now – and this one was one of the rare ones that I kept.  Why?  Sturdy, well-designed horizontal scratchers are hard to come by and my cats still love the Felix Katnip Tree Company Scratching Beam.  It is still hard to get footage of them using it – but here’s a quick clip that I got the other day.

I love this thing because not only is it horizontal, but the cats can scratch on it from top or bottom – mine seem to use it upside down, belly up, scratching away – much like a cat does on a bottom carpeted stair.  We have also already had this for almost 2 years and it looks fabulous – we don’t even need to replace the sisal.  Of course, sisal usage, etc. is going to vary by cat user =).

Does Your Cat Like to Scratch on Stairs? Solution: Felix Katnip Tree Company Scratching Beam

The Felix Katnip Tree Company Scratching Beam is a horizontal sisal cat scratching post that is 10 1/4″ high and 28 1/2″ long.

This hand crafted scratching post is really neat in the sense that it is a horizontal option that can be used from the top or the bottom. As I predicted in the arrival video below, Trigg likes to flop over and use it from the side or from underneath.

The Felix Katnip Scratching Beam is made from real wood, natural hemp sisal, certified organic catnip, and birch end pieces. The lifted horizontal design is great for a kitty like Trigg who likes to flip over and scratch the bottom of my carpeted stairs in the basement. Linseed oil is the smell that I talk about in the arrival video below – the two sides are just finished off with linseed oil. And usually they have more time to air out than the one we got, so that’s why it was so fragrant out of the box.  I like the smell of linseed oil, so it wasn’t an issue for me.

It comes with the two sides and the cat scratching post separated, so there is some assembly required.  You will need to have a drill or a screw driver to put it together (they send you the screws you’ll need) – but it is super simple to put together, as you will see in our arrival video below.

I am really excited about this scratching post – someone was thinking when they came up with this design.  In other words, someone was really studying how certain cats scratch and how they might help cat owners have a solution other than their stairs or furniture for scratching.

This one is a hit and will most likely stay as a staple scratching post in our home for years to come.  Or it might make a trip to my parents’ lake house where Chiggy likes to scratch on those open stairs.

Secretly, I want Felix Katnip Tree Company to come out with another one that has a wider surface area on the stop, so that it can be use as a launching platform for playing, a scratcher and a lounge.

Thank you to Felix Katnip Tree Company for sending us this great new cat product.
