Dixie Rose – Ragdoll Kitten of the Month
After 14 years of unconditional love and two moves, our beloved Ragdoll Lily Lu traveled to the Rainbow Bridge. We were devastated, and the house was not the same with only three cats, when four had been the norm for many years. Our beloved blue-mitted Lynx was greatly missed by us and Bazil, Cotton & Raleigh. She had always been there, welcoming each new family member when they all found their forever home with us. She was the queen of the house.
A few days after Lily’s passing, a post showed up on my Facebook feed about two available female Ragdoll kittens from the breeder we got Raleigh from. I inquired with Blake Carroll at Lowcountry Ragdolls in Hardeesville, South Carolina, about the kittens’ availability. They promptly replied and let us know one was a lynx like Lily. The decision was quick, and we asked about a date to pick her up and bring her to her forever home. A date was set, and on that day, the three-hour one-way trip began. The journey down and back passed quickly. On the trip back home, the new kitten meowed on occasion to ask what was going on.
When we arrived home, Bazil, Cotton, and Raleigh greeted us at the door. They were all curious as to what was in the carry container. We set the pet carry container on the floor and unzipped the door. All three stood sniffing the container and watching as the kitten slowly exited, checking out her new surroundings.
Raleigh’s tail immediately went up, and he greeted the new kitten, his half sister. Cotton was a little put out, and Bazil watched her with curiosity. Raleigh stuck by her and watched her as she began to explore the house. He immediately took a liking to his half-sister, and they quickly became playmates. Keeping with the southern names for our southern Ragdolls, she was named Dixie Rose.
It had been six months since her entrance into the house. Raleigh and Dixie still play together. Cotton has warmed up to her, and they play on occasion. Bazil eventually warmed up to her, but doesn’t play with her. She brought a new light to the house. Dixie is very curious about everything and doesn’t want to miss what is going on anywhere.
As she gets older, Dixie looks a lot like Lily but has an entirely different personality. The little ball of love enjoys being pampered and has made her mark on the household. She follows Raleigh around and does what he does. A total copycat. She is curious about the goings on outside and especially enjoyed watching the hummingbirds this summer. Dixie also found the paper towel roll and, for a short time, decided it was something to play with and tear apart. Thank goodness she eventually grew out of that one.
She is nine months old now and is bigger than her two family members, Cotton and Bazil. Dixie has a few more pounds to catch up to Raleigh’s size. She enjoys playing with balls, tubular spring toys, and whatever else she can drag out of the cat toy box. She loves napping in one of the bathroom sinks and being a busybody at the slightest noise. Nothing seems to get past her.
One day, an anole got into the house, and she thought she had a new play toy. Dixie tried to corner the fast-moving reptile, but it quickly scampered out the same way it came in and escaped. The small gap in the screen door corner was fixed so it could not come in again, but she still guards the door sometimes and watches the spot where it exited. She waits for her play friend to return.
She can never replace our love for Lily, but Dixie has found a new spot in our hearts with her gentleness and love.
