Chester – Ragdoll of the Week
Because I had a young child (my 12 yr old was then just 2) I researched breeds, the ragdoll characteristics were the perfect match for us. With all the various colors, I wanted a light color mitted boy.
We found Chester through a recommendation of a breeder from another breeder who had a 2+ year waiting list. I contacted the breeder Sky Ragdolls (she has since moved from Mankato) and put a deposit on upcoming litter. She was so kind and gave me a ton of information to prepare for the new addition.
Chester was born on Christmas Eve, 2009. All the kittens had reindeer names, his was Dasher. The breeder kept the kittens until 12 weeks of age and he was laser neutered prior to coming home. As he grew, she sent me pictures each week.
Excited to bring home the new addition, we decided to name the fluffy kitten Jasper, after a character in the Twilight Series. Shortly after my parents came to visit, my father is hard of hearing. So…. My dad said “what’s his name? Chester?” My husband loves to tease so it was “come here Chester, good boy Chester” to get a rise from me. Nope, didn’t care, I wanted the white fluffy kitten with orange ears and didn’t care what his name was. Chester it is, and it is 100% fitting.
We joke that if we put a fit bit on Chet, he would get about 10 steps a day in. I work from home, so he lays in my office for most of the day to then lay on the couch after dinner to lay on the bed between hubz and I at night. He is a lover and loves all people. He loves the most whoever opens that wet cat food as a treat in the a.m. He comes to his name and guests walk in and shout Chet! are you home? In hopes of him trotting out to greet them.
Chester escaped through a patio door left open by a guest about 5 years ago. He was missing for 2 full days before found. Although the experience was not a good one, he makes a run for the door each time it’s open. Because we have a 6-foot-tall privacy fence, he is allowed to join us outside on nice summer/fall days and loves it. Our other ragdoll doesn’t come near the door and has 0 interest.
EVERYONE who meets him loves this cat, non-cat people say, “I don’t like cats, but I like THIS cat”. Chester has an Instagram encouraged by my son, “chester_the_coolest_ragdoll”. I may be biased but he is by far the coolest cat I’ve ever met, even my dentist asks to see photos, not of my two kids but of my cool cat.
Ragdolls are not an inexpensive breed. BUT they live a very long time and the personality you get in return is worth waiting to save up! My husband who is not an animal person loves this cat and has a photo framed in his office….. THAT is a testimonial of the breed. Get two for twice the fun!!
