2015 Black Friday and Cyber Monday Opt Out

Post Published on November 27, 2015 | Last Updated on July 8, 2021 by Jenny

Have you seen the REI video where Jerry Stritzke, the CEO of REI talks about closing all of their stores on Black Friday and letting their employees spend it outside?  It’s even got a hashtag, #OptOutside.  If you missed the video announcement, I have embedded it below:

I quite like the campaign on many different levels (including a genius PR/marketing move), so I decided not to do a Black Friday or Cyber Monday post on Floppycats.  I really feel that Black Friday has gotten out of control and we’re losing perspective.  Hey, I am all about a good deal on great products, but also feel it’s important to have balance.  You can find good deals on days other than Black Fridays.  There’s something about celebrating our blessings and our hearts on Thanksgiving and turning around to commercialism craziness on Black Friday that rubs me the wrong way.  I have supported it in the past and might in the future, but this year, I am opting out on Floppycats.

Rather, I invite you to spend the day with your kitties – take a video or a photo and share it on our Facebook page. Do you know how to see the posts on our Facebook page that are posted by others?  You don’t even have to have a Facebook account to visit our page and see the posts. Once you’re on Facebook to see the posts by others, simply scroll down on the left hand side to where it says, “Visitor Posts” and you can see all the wonderful kitties that are a part of our community of Ragdoll cat lovers.

Thank you all for being here – I am interested in your opinions about the whole Black Friday and Cyber Monday craze, please feel free to share in the comment section below.

YAY Jenny! Am so glad you did this and totally agree. That is awesome that REI let their employees go out and enjoy themselves outside. You are so right about losing perspective and think it has gotten way out of hand. Love having some downtime days where all the craziness stops and we can clear our minds and be thankful for all our blessings.

Thank you for opting out Jenny! Personally, I don’t find the Black Friday hype appealing, so I would rather spend my time with my Raggies, and enjoying a nice walk outdoors. Our society is increasingly focused on status and material gain. We have people fist fighting in line, what a shame, it’s really sad. The thought of all the advertising waste going to the landfill makes me cringe. The only Black Friday event I participated in was the Black Friday Showdown, watching the Black and Gold, my favorite team, the Boston Bruins defeat the Rangers.

i have done the black friday thing a few times. the stuff i was doing it for was gone and personally i feel the best deals are after christmas. plus i’ve never really been a part of the pack and i like that about myself. i actually fasted yesterday. wednesday i had a conversation with what i think was an actual angel at starbucks. it was strange. and i see these videos with people fighting over black friday deals and i feel ashamed to be a part of the species. and the thought of the traffic … forget it. the holidays are supposed to be about a spirit of love and reflection on the year and yes of giving .. but not just of material things. and what happened to “good will” towards each other?! today i’m very much enjoying being home with my cats. we are snuggling on the couch, playing with cat nip bubbles and taking naps. woo hooo!

Awesome. Just awesome. I applaud the CEO of REI for his actions and I also applaud you for yours this year!!! YAY!!!!

I totally agree that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are out of control (thank you Advertising Minions Of Doom!) and ridiculous. They tarnish the entire Thanksgiving Holiday, I think.

Opting out is a good stand to take. Good for you. *applause*

    Big hugs!

I’m also over Black Friday! I broke my own rule about shopping on Thanksgiving Day by going to Target last night for a deal, but I was gone 1 hour and back home with my kitties. Today we’re just chilling at home listening to music and watching the birds. I agree that there are deals to be found year around, mostly online, and it’s insane to sacrifice your sanity for a few dollars for something you probably didn’t need anyways.

I love REI – and while I didn’t get out today, I did go on a 3 mile walk with a meetup group yesterday morning before Thanksgiving so I think that counts. 🙂 I need to get to REI this weekend for some new walking poles for hiking! I’m glad to give them my business.

how fun is that with the meet up group? love it. i haven’t found a meetup group here like that. do you participate in any other meetup groups? enjoy your kitties!

This meetup group is the Tacoma Mountaineers Singles group – so older single folks who like hiking and the outdoors. I’ve been a member for a couple of years, but this was my first activity! I don’t know what I was waiting for – it was a lot of fun. Not to mention good looking single guys.

I need to look for a crazy cat ladies meetup group, and I’d be complete! LOL
