Non-Traditional Cat Toys: Cats Make Their Own Toys

Reader Morgan wrote me asking if I would post about asking Ragdoll owners what toys or items are enjoyed by their Ragdoll cats that have not been purchased commercially as a cat toy and then continued on to say, “My Ragdoll absolutely loves a left-over piece of plush carpet – I roll it up with the plush side inside, I don’t fasten it and he crawls inside, and when it unrolls a bit, he jumps under it and scoots around. I periodically roll it back up again and it all starts once more.”

What does your kitty enjoy playing with that is a non-traditional cat toy?

Floor mats seem to be my girls favourites, be they a sheepskin rug or a sisal runner. She is also VERY fond of pan scouring pads.

Cats are contrary. You can buy them the best toy in the world, they’re going to find and steal an old sock and drop it on you while you sleep!

Oh, and my poor old dog, my Ragdoll loves to play with her, Bull Terriers are certainly not traditional/commercial cat toys!

PS. Unless you know and understand your pet Rag and Bull Terrier very well, do not leave them alone together. Totally different body language. Both pretty fearless breeds. But both totally adorable!

Great post, JennY! What a wonderful question, Morgan! And…how awesome that Morgan and Smokey (both BEAUTIFUL, btw!) enjoy that piece of carpet. Hilarious!

Our Miss Pink Sugarbelle lurves empty cardboard boxes and paper sacks (which isn’t unusual as most kittehs lurve these items). That’s about it for things we just have laying around that she’ll just start to play with…

    Thanks for sharing!

    Big hugs!

Mine loves Nerf gun darts, twist ties, marbles and paper. One of his favorite places to sleep is on my husbands computer back pack.

My cats also love carpet! I’ve also found my hair ties and head bands were disappearing until I caught one cat stealing one off my bed! So now I buy two packs ^^ Bottle tops, empty boxes of all sizes, balled up tape (they like to bat at it and go crazy when it sticks, then rinse repeat when they get it off) and pencils and pens (one cat likes to spin them and knock them around) all seem to be kitty approved in my house ( even if not owner approved!).

My Diva, who lives up to her name, likes to live on the edge.
She will open a drawer near my sewing machine and take out a straight pin with a head and chase that around until I see what she is playing with and take it away. She will find a dropped screw and play with that too. She will steal my tatting shuttles, especially if there is tatting attached, and bat that around for a while, then finding a nice spot to chew on my tatting. One time, she even put it back where she took it, and when I went to do some tatting, it was sopping wet. I looked everywhere for the leak, but as soon as I turned around, my guilty looking cat ran away. Had she kept a poker face, I would never have known. She is not fond of any cat toy I buy (my youngest dog likes them), but she does like dog toys, even the soft frisbee that she will retrieve.

One of these days I will get a normal animal and won’t know what to do with it.

My Peri likes Nerf darts, deflated balloons, big rubber bands, a mad cow disease microbe plush toy (she likes to take it into a box and groom it, no clue why), and bamboo knitting needles. I have two unfinished scarves lying around because the needles just disappear on me.
