OfflineI have a 3 year old neutered Raggy. He lives with the dog (16) and another moggy (2) and the four children.
He has a pretty bad disposition – growling and swearing at us and pretty stand offish but we can all cope with that.
He refuses to use a litter tray and it is really driving me insane to the point of needing to rehome him if I can't solve the problem. (It is not a territory defining behaviour.)
I went through major hassles with him finding a litter he would use to begin with and he rarely uses the crystals which I hate as they hurt the soles of your feet no end as opposed to refusing point blank to use any other type of litter.
I started out with two trays one up stairs and one down, both in the bathroom areas. He would use each one once and then use the floor for every subsequent toilet visit. He moved from the bathroom to the kitchen and uses the floor as a litter tray. I saw no point in having two trays if he refused to use any and the other puss was fine with any tray, so cut back to one which made the problem no worse.
I keep the tray free of solids and make sure it is not past its use by date (if you know what I mean). It is always well scrubbed when the litter is changed and well rinsed so there is no off putting smell for him. It doesn't seem to matter what I clean it with or what I wash/scrub the floors with, he still maintains his stance.
Not only is it very unhygienic and stinks, it is very embarrassing if anyone stays overnight as I have to bolt downstairs at the crack of dawn to clean up after the cat.
Sincerely hoping some wise souls on here can help resolve the problem! The vet has checked him out and healthwise he is perfect!
Many thanks

OfflineIt sounds like he is pretty stressed. Unfortunately he may be one of those cats who would perhaps prefer a quieter home.
Have you tried a Feliway plug in diffuser – (you would probably need two or three if your home is large). Also if you have an "open" tray have you tried providing him with a hooded one or vice versa – you could go back to having two; one open and one hooded and see if it makes a difference. You could try putting some Bach's Rescue Remedy in his water or get some Zylkene tablets – all of which may help reduce his stress level.
Have you ever asked advice from his breeder?

OfflineI know this is extremely frustrating, as I had a cat who struggled with this her whole life. One thing is that he should have a vet visit to determine if there is any urinary tract infection or physical problem. If cats have any discomfort or pain when they eliminate, they associate this with the litterbox and avoid the litterbox.
If the cat pees on hard surfaces, he may prefer hard surfaces and so may use a litterbox with no litter in it……..or just a pee pad……its something to try, anyway.
If it is a behavioral problem, and not a physical problem you could try retraining him to the litterbox. Leave him in a small room with the litterbox…and food & water (but don't have these too close to the litterbox)…until he starts to use the box again. If he pees around the box but not in the box, there is something he does not like about the box.
Some cats need a completely clean box every day…….which is a huge hassle!
These are just some ideas………believe me I know how frustrating it is!

Hey there… I'm so sorry. That sounds so stressful. Just taking a bit of a guess, but I'm thinking your Rag is overwhelmed by the other pets/people in your household… Is he from a breeder? Rags shouldn't have a disposition like that really, it would be rather unusual… Have you tried confining him to a little room by himself, away from the other pets and people?
I wish I could be more helpful. We dealt with random urination from our male Bengal for quite awhile and it was unbelievably stressful. I feel your pain. I hope we can help you find a solution!
