I am currently having a problem with one of my ragdolls.  My mink, Bella, has no problem letting me trim her nails.  Both cats use one of several scratching posts I have throughout my home, but Henley, seal point, refuses to let me trim hers.  She immediately starts bucking and trying to get away from me.  in the last month I've managed to get one paw trimmed when she was asleep.  Needless to say I had to stop as soon as she started waking up.  I'm trying to get her used to my handling her paws, but I'm afraid I've waited to long to get her used to this.  She's 7 months old, and I've trimmed them several times since I've had her.  It just gets harder and harder.  Anyone have a great idea???

I'll take drugs for 500 please…….how do you trim a cats claws?…..What is Rescue Remedy

We used rescue remedy on the Bengal when we were introducing the Ragdoll to the Bengal to calm her nerves down, just a drop or 2 on the tongue and 5-10 mins later she was still slightly agro but a bit less numpy over it all. I think you might be able to use the same approach for clipping claws but check with the vets first.

As for Dante, my stubborn chocolate point …..he is not too thrilled about me trimming his claws but once you have a good hold of him you can usally get through them all pretty quickly without much fuss, we only trim the front claws though as these are the only ones that get sharpened into hypodermic needles on the scratching posts.

We took the kitties to a local groomer the first time who showed us how to do it at home easilly. We tend to put them on the cat tree perch so their paw just hangs over the edge, which makes it easier. We have them lay down on their belly, then one of us is in charge of keeping them in that position which is quite easy, you just gently press down on their back if they try to get up, (don't know how else to describe it – but it's like the vet would hold them!), lots of cuddles and distraction with a treat, then the other quickly trims the nails. Not sure if you have someone who could help you, but I do find two people makes it a lot easier.

Also what are you using to trim the nails? We use a nail trimmer that we picked up from the groomer which is really easy to use and makes the job very quick. It looks like a cigar cutter – you put it around the claw, press down and it snips it right off. Like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wahl-S…..B000PTZ5BK

Hope some of this helps!

No, with Dante I get my fiance to hold him while I trim the claws in question, Resuce Remedy should be able to be bought from your local pharmacy, I'm unsure whether or not it can be bought in the U.S but thats where we get it from here in Aus.

Good luck…

Resuce Remedy can also be bought from any health food store!!

For our three, it's a 2-person job.  I hold the cats and clip while my husband gives them belly and chin scratches.  They don't know whether to be pissed to purring.  If I move quickly enough, I'm done before they decide!

P.S.  Oster makes a GREAT nail clipper, quick and clean cuts.

hmm, have to figure out how to do as a one person job.  I like to wait until they sleep and try my best with just a nail clipper.  On my daughters late DSH we would use the bundle up in towel method, but dang he wasn't 16lbs of muscle lol
