I bought a beautiful mink girl around May for $500 (very low… because she was the last one and they wanted to get rid of her) I didn't know much about Ragdolls (besides their beauty and attitude!) at the time and saw the breeder on the TICA so I figured she was reputable and left it at that. I got a full health guarantee for a year and a bag of Royal Canin (I felt like I got such a deal!) but I now realize after a bit of research many people consider the minks as frauds and overpriced and called "rare" when in reality most breeders don't breed for this. I got a odd feeling when I met the breeder she met me at a gas station in Arkansas so we didn't have to travel so far. Do you think I was scammed? Are Minks a scam? Please help!

Hi there!

We're the proud owners of 2 Minks – A Seal Point Mitted Male and a Seal Point Female.  Minks are Ragdolls, and are a kind of throwback to the founding breeds (Burmese in this case).  Many breeders bred out this colouring.  Some are trying to keep it going.  TICA recognized the mink Ragdoll, but it cannot be shown as a Ragdoll.  Hopefully this will change in the near future.

I provided a link that the breeder we bought from has.  It is very informative – take a look.

You weren't scammed, and yes, the mink is rare. Their fur is actually softer than the regular Ragdoll.  We also have a traditional Ragdoll as well.  Their looks and temperment are all Ragdoll!!

Opinions vary strongly on this matter.  What is boils down to for me is – do you love your kitty?  It really doesn't matter if they are rare or not – as long as you love her!  Also, my Ragdolls were $800/each, so $500 is a steal!

Beth said:  I enjoyed visiting the link 3Rags sent so I could see how beautiful Minks are.  I often wonder if my Baby Mew is a Raggie in disguise.  She has every Ragdoll characteristic except large size, blue eyes and Siamese markings.  She is normal female weight (8 #), has long fluffy marmalade color fur (orange mackeral striped) and amber eyes.  Baby Mew's sweet personality and constant cuddliness are very Ragdoll.  Because she's a rescue like all the cats I've had, I don't know her origins.  Doesn't matter what she is, she's my treasure sf smile Ragdoll Cat Forum

If they are, you better not tell Denali because he's all Ragdoll!  I have two traditional Ragdolls and a 4 month old Mink Ragdoll kitten.  They are all SBT TICA registered from the same breeder.   They are not "rare", and at least at my breeder, they are the same price as the traditional Ragdolls.  From everything I've read, they are more like some of the foundation Ragdolls – just a different color, but all Ragdoll!  And I think they are gorgeous.

Now a different issue is meeting someone at a gas station.  I want to see where the kittens are born and raised, and will always go to my breeder's house.  My older boys are 5 and before the baby came home, I would often go down to the breeder's house just to play with the kittens!

Hopefully your mink is happy and healthy – you did not get scammed!  My Ragdolls were considerably more expensive, but worth every penny!
