hypothyroidism??? | Hypothyroidism | Ragdoll Cat Forum
August 16, 2012
This forum should probably be deleted…or at the very least, renamed…Cats are not prone to being Hyp-o-thyroid. Cats become Hyperthyroid. There is a very big difference here. Cats become hyperthyroid because they develop cancer or hormone producing nodules on their Thyroid gland as they age. This means the cat has too MUCH thyroid hormone rather than too LITTLE thyroid hormone (ie hypothyroid). Dogs on the other hand are prone to be Hypothyroid because their thyroid begins to fail as they age and no longer produces enough thyroid hormone. One of the most notable differences in these conditions is that a hyperthyroid cat will lose weight and still be eating voraciously whereas a hypothyroid dog will gain weight even when put on a strict diet.
