Hello all..

Just wanted to ask a question really… when Inkie was 6 months old (she is now 15 months) she was spayed. I'll have to explain the story for it to make sense really but they said they would be making the incision underneath her etc. Anyway after they had done the surgery they called me to say that they had had a problem with the first incision as her uterus was extremely huge and distended (seemed she was on her first heat) so they had to shave more fur off her and make a larger incision on her left side…

So while she had two incision sites and a rather lot of fur shaved off they said it would take about 4 months or so for her fur to grow back…(she had the op 1st April 2011)

Now her tummy fur grew back quite quickly and the same colour as it was prior to surgery creamy/white but on her left side where they had actually done the surgery successfully grew back at first what seemed jet black.. though as it continued to grow it was much more a very dark brown…

This first picture is on June 12th so it's about 11 weeks ish after the surgery..

It took a long time for it to grow to the same length as the rest of her…

This next picture was taken on the 28th August 2011 where it had very nearly grown back to full length but still very dark…

And then finally a photo taken 2 days ago on the 18th Nov 2011 you can see it is still quite dark.. infact the same as her front legs and her tail.

It is definitely growing out this darker colour because if I look underneath it you can see lighter fur from the root (the same as the rest of her main body) there so it is slowly growing out and it has now been well over 7 months since she had the operation.. and the dark hair is probably only about half a cm in length now if that but I was wondering if anyone else had this with their ragdolls.

The vet did say there was a chance it could grow back a different colour but I didn't believe for a second it would lol. I know she will eventually be back to her proper colour on that side and I guess it is taking as a long as it does for her to completely grow out of her first coat so to speak but really out of interest wondered if anyone else had this at all.

I am sorry Inkie had a problem with her spay (I understand that Freya ended up with a hernia) It is normal for shaved hair to grow out dark and it might depend on the time of year as well.  I have heard that temperature affects or is that effects the growth colour.  It should continue to grow out into her normal colouring – what ever that maybe as well Raggies colours continue to change until they are about 4 years old.  My oldest two had to be shaved to have blood drawn on the neck this spring and they had a dark patch there that grew out.

Arr very interesting is that thank you for your reply Rebecca..

Inkie did have a problem with both sites and had what 2 Seroma's the one on her left side was quite small (ironically as that's where they succeeded with her spay) but the one on her tummy was the size of a boiled egg and they did keep an eye on it every few days for a couple of weeks and I had to take her back for them to look at it but they went down and healed nicely in the end. Apparently it is very common and a reaction to the sutures, I can only guess seroma/hernia being the same thing?

Very interesting to read what you say about temperatures being a factor … you learn something new everyday. It is getting there and over the last month I have noticed areas of her where she has changed colour very slightly but while I knew they take 4 years to grow to their actual size I didn't realise their colour would continue to change either. Thanks for the info chick sf laugh Ragdoll Cat Forum

lol, no they wouldn't let them take blood from their paws and to top it off, Freyr struggled so much that they popped a vein too.  I don't call them hooligans for nothing lol.  Since the fur on their neck is short it didn't take long to grow back and it wasn't as dark as the patch on Inkie.

Freya had a reaction to the stitches and one either popped or dissolved early, she was a mess, they had to repair her hernia, so a second operation was done.

If you look at pictures of Raggie kittens and then their year old and two year old etc pictures you can see the changes in colour.  Most dramatic changes I think take place the first year, but I still see changes in my two year olds.  Am enjoying watching the 7 month olds colours change
