Do Your Cats Play?  Who Starts It?

I posted a photo on our Facebook page the other day, showing that Chiggy instigates play fighting between he and Charlie. A lot of readers were surprised, so the following day, when Chiggy was doing it again, I decided to take a video, which I have posted below. I also posted it on our Facebook page.

As you can see, Trigg, who is my subordinate cat, always starts the play fights.  And it’s pretty funny – but Charlie doesn’t necessarily enjoy it.

  1. Wonderful topic, Jenny! Oh, how I wish I had two Ragdolls! 🙂 <3

Lurve that look on Chiggy's face AND Charlie's face in that photo! Hilarious AND adorable!!! Enjoyed the video A LOT, too! Super cute! Chiggy is such a rascal! 🙂 <3

In the past when we lived in a bigger place and our son was still at home we had multiple animals (cats and dogs). The two cats we had were sisters from the same litter. Desert Lynx breed. They were the best of friends and enemies. They'd be sleeping together (one of on top of the other usually) and wake up to groom each other and the next thing you know they'd be tumbling around play fighting, wrestling and chasing each other all over the house. It was fascinating and hilarious to watch.

Big hugs & lots of love!

  2. Haha! What a great video and love that pic of Chiggy’so face looking surprised that he was caught! Yes, absolutely it happens all the time between Illaria and Grace. Illaria instigateso it any time that poor Grace tries to lounge on ANYTHING one of the 5 loungers in the family room. Illaria will come over and begin washing Grace’s head like she is preening her except for the fact that it leads to her biting Gracie’s neck and then the chase is on. Grace chases Illaria all around the house, up and down the steps. When Illaria is finally caught, she hisses and spits with such indignation like she is the most innocent little dear! It is hilarious to watch and love it so much!❤❤

  3. Oh yes- the washing ploy technique is used often in my house. It usually deteriorates into wrestling with Emily being the aggressor, though I’ve seen Hunter bug her enough to get it started. Hunters’ defense method is to push at Emily with his back legs straight out while she bites him. I sometimes worry they’re getting too rough, but no one leaves the fracas!

  4. All four of our boys initiate the play fight. It usually happens right after dinner and we call it the Floor Show. Usually the one that starts it has a lot of built up energy and takes on anyone that will play back.
