Today marks two years since my beloved Rags passed away. I CANNOT believe it has already been that long – my heart misses him the most.

He is the reason for this site and that is why his name is in the navigation bar of this site.

Therefore, it seemed fitting to honor him by announcing my first ebook, A Ragdoll Kitten Care Guide: Bringing Your Ragdoll Kitten Home. After all, he did tell the animal communicator that he wanted me to continue on with floppycats.com as one of his dying requests.

Django – Ragdoll of the Week

Django - a Blue Lynx Mitted Ragdoll Kitten

I first began researching Ragdolls over a year ago and really thought I had found the breed for me and my family. I wanted to meet one in person however to make sure and went to a cat show last year and fell in love with them! I knew that our next family member would be a Ragdoll and that in a couple of years, when my twin daughters were older, we would adopt one. Then this past spring we lost our 13 year old greyhound and I realized after she was gone how sad it was not to have a pet in our home. We never had a cat with her because she was not a “cat safe” greyhound and my husband is not a “cat person” – however since our adoption of Django, he is definitely becoming more open minded!

So I began my search for a Ragdoll. At first I loved the blue bi-color pattern and wanted a female but when I contacted a breeder she said she had a blue lynx mitted male available. I quickly looked up all the pictures I could find on the Internet of blue lynx mitted Ragdoll cats and kittens and decided that this was the color pattern I loved! Of course when I went to meet him for the first time at seven weeks old there was no way he wasn’t coming back home with me in a few weeks! Django’s breeder is Barbara McKee of Hemlock Trails in CT.

Django

Django, who is named after Django Reinhardt (a jazz guitarist from the 1920′s) is almost four months old now. He has been a wonderful addition to our family. Some of Django’s favorite activities are sleeping with our shoes on the mat near the front door, playing with his Cat Dancer toy and being carried around the house cradled in our arms like a baby. He also loves to eat and has nearly tripled in size since we brought him home 6 weeks ago. He is so cuddly and playful and always right there in the room with us – all of the characteristics that I wanted in a cat. He has adjusted to life with toddlers amazingly well and I think that it is awesome that my girls get to grow up with such a beautiful animal and friend.

My Visit to Little Apple Ragdolls in Manhattan, KS

You all might have read about the fact that my mom and I were traveling to Manhattan, KS to visit a Ragdoll breeder there. I had contact Andra through the Internet, asking if my mom and I could come and vist. Manhattan, KS is about 2.5 hours from where I live in the Kansas City area.

You might remember reading Andra’s breeder interview that was posted last week. I wanted to have that background for the readers before I posted about our visit.

First and foremost, the fact that Andra and her mom were so willing to allow my mom and me into their homes for such a visit was a treat and an honor. I think the fact that Andra was so willing was a good sign too. Of course, some breeders have been burned by people visiting them, so a lot of breeders don’t allow a visit unless you have a deposit on a kitten and even then, you might be limited to certain areas of the house.

Of course, the intentions of my visit were different, so all that didn’t matter.

We started at Andra’s home and met Bailey’s kittens that were just about to leave to go to their forever homes. They were awesome and running all over the house – talk about being raised underfoot!

Sweet Pippin – pictured above – was also at Andra’s – and although not the father to those kittens was very comfortable with them and wanted to play.

Unfortunately, I have this personality trait where I tend to pick favorites very quickly and well, Pippin won out for me as cat of the day. I was really impressed with him – his size, his head, his personality – he was truly awesome.

All Little Apple Ragdolls are named after apples. “Little Apple” of course refers to Manhattan, KS – since the Big Apple is Manhattan, NY. I guess there are over 7500 varieties of apples worldwide, so the name selections are endless.

Oh, did I mention that Andra’s house was spotless – very, very clean. And I could tell it wasn’t a cleaning just for my mom’s and my visit – it was really clean.

We spent our time at Andra’s playing with the kittens and also I asked her questions about her kittens – what she fed them, the litter she used, toys she liked, etc. All of that can be read on Andra’s breeder interview.

Here are a few photos I snapped of the kitten room at Andra’s house – the kittens spend a small amount of time in this room as they are being weaned from their mom and as they get litter box trained and then they end up having full access to the entire house!

After spending a lot of time at Andra’s we headed over to her mom’s house to meet the remainder of the crew.

Upon arrival at Andra’s mom’s house, we met a pregnant Pearl and a prego Gala. Along with Dakota, who happened to be the father of Bailey’s current litter that we saw at Andra’s house.

After those three, we met Emma’s kittens. Turns out Emma is related to my Rags through Ragnarok’s Thor. Emma had a darling personality and looked like a mom! She was totally fine with us touching and picking up her kittens and wanted us to play with her too!

Just before we were getting ready to leave, Emma plopped down and allowed her kittens to nurse! It was such a treat because I had my video camera rolling when she did it.

Introducing Prince William!

Halston, Marcus and Tiffany (German Shepherd)

As many of you know, my love for Ragdolls started with a kitty named Halston. He was a Seal Mitted Ragdoll with a blaze from Ragnarok Cattery in California. My aunt got him when I was just 2 years old. So by the time I was 7-8, he was 6 years old and the coolest cat. It was because of him that I wanted a cat and it had to be a Ragdoll.

My Aunt first discovered Ragdolls when they were featured on the front cover of Time Magazine in 1979. A friend of hers was looking for a cat, and the one featured on the cover was from the same cattery that Halston was from.

Halston died many years ago now - he lived to be 15. My Aunt had three other Ragdolls too – Marcus (a blue mitted – in the photo to right), Ashley (a bi-color) and then Brett – my grandmother’s cat. When my grandmother passed, Brett went to live with my Aunt Nicky. Brett died in 2009 a few months before Rags.

Earlier this year, my Aunt was searching the Internet for a Ragdoll Kitten and came across Prince William on Angelic Ragdolls’ site.

There were many obstacles for Prince William to come to my Aunt. Number 1 – Prince William was born in Sweden! And to come to the USA he had to be 3.5 months old to get his rabies shot! But my Aunt persisted and she is so excited.

He arrives tomorrow in Atlanta! My aunt is flying down to get him. So I will be meeting him on Sunday and will post more photos soon! Isn’t he gorgeous!

The addition of Prince William makes 8 Ragdolls on my mom’s side of the family!

This is an archive shot, from the last time I went to visit Wendy, at Ragnificent Ragdolls. These are Kahlua & Cream on the left, and Kit Kat on the right. I wish I could have taken them home with me. This was taken last year. I think that Kahlua is now one of the queens. She’s a very sweet cat. Kit Kat is a character. He almost wound up in my camera bag, but I think Wendy would have noticed.
