Sharon Bailey is a registered Ragdoll Breeder with QFA and her prefix is “Cherishme Ragdolls”. She and her family and fur babies live on the Sunshine Coast QLD.

How long have you been breeding Ragdolls?

Although I have owned many cats in my youth. I registered with QICC in 2007 as a registered breeder of Ragdolls. Then bought my first Ragdoll not very long after. A seal mitted princess. We quickly adopted another 2 in the following months and had our first litter of Ragdoll kittens the following January. I take a lot of pride in keeping our cats in peak condition. All of our cats and kittens are fed on premium foods, mostly fresh meats.

How did you pick Ragdolls to breed?

I was originally looking at breeding the Orientals. Having owned a pedigree Tonkinese in my teenage years. I had decided to attend a cat show to meet with a few breeders and select who we would choose to buy our first kitten from. Only once I arrived at the show, I was awestruck when I looking in the Longhair rings… especially around at the Ragdolls. As I have a young family, it was decided that the lovable more docile pace of the Ragdoll was suited for our family.

Do you show? Why or why not?

We do show our cats. I take great pride in learning from comments off judges and other breeders just how well we are doing in getting our cats to the Ragdoll standards. We have been quite successful and thoroughly enjoy the day out with our cats and fellow breeders. Of course we only show as our cats as they enjoy lapping up all the attention.

What congenital defects are in Ragdolls?

CherishMe Ragdolls Kittens

Ragdolls are able to be born with HCM and PKD inherited defects. These are defects which are easily able to be avoided by testing parents and only breeding with clear cats. Choosing the best of the best as your breeding queen & stud is also vital. Any obvious external defects, wrong shape or kink tails should not be bred with.

How are you breeding to avoid those defects?

We DNA test all of our cats through Animal DNA Labs in Melbourne. It is cost effective, and very quick and simple. There is no excuse for not checking for these genetic markers.

How large is your breeding operation?

We are definitely small scale. With only 4 adult girls and 2 working stud males. Though we have kept a promising young kitten from this past litter. What I like to do, is have our girls retired into their loving forever homes by the time they are 3-4 years old. That way they have a long time with the families that can lavish attention on them 1 on 1. I love all of my cats. But the time I give to each of them is not the same as what they get from a home that only has them as a pet. A queen may have 2 or 3 litters before I retire her. But it is extremely hard to move them to their last forever home. I can’t keep them once retired. As much as I want to. But they have done so much for me and I pay to desex them and give them away to a loving home.

Where do your cats spend most of their time?

Generally, all Ragdolls should be just inside only cats. And yes, ours spend 95% there time indoors. And the majority of that time our cats are curled up on our beds asleep. However, on weekends, we quite often take our cats outside on the lawn to play.

CherishMe Ragdolls Arrow

Do you breed full time? In other words, do you have another job?

Yes, breeding is full time. No matter if you have another job or if you are a stay at home mum. I do however work as a receptionist for a local firm as well as being a full-time carer for my cats. When our girls are due to have their kittens, I do take leave from work to be there for them. We only have a few litters per year, so this is minor impact on my work life. Lets just say all my “me time” involves my cats. But I truly would not have it any other way. Quite a lot of time is spent with each individual kitten, and we do become very close. I welcome and recommend new owners to come and bond with their kittens in the weeks prior to home time. I also put together a comprehensive folder with photos from birth til home time of each individual kitten. It’s a nice keepsake for the new owners and something they can add to over the years if they choose to.

What sort of health guarantees do you offer?

Because we are very careful in the selection and genetic diversity of the cats we breed with, I offer replacement or refund for any kitten bought from me that was found to have any genetic disorder or defect. We provide new owners with 6 weeks free insurance from pet plan. But this is to cover for major accidents if you kitten is injured during transport or a fall. If our directions in regards to diet and living conditions are followed, there should be no foreseen problems arising from the transition into their new home.

What happens if the kitten gets sick?

If your kitten was to get sick in the first few weeks of your care. We always recommend to contact us immediately. Depending on what the problem may be, I would recommend professional treatment to be sort. In the past few years though, the only experience with sick kittens is when people have not continued with the diet that the kittens have grown up on. They don’t handle immediate change of diet well when adjusting into their new home. Informative care sheets are given with what types of foods and quantities are included in new owners kitten folders that they take home.

CherishMe Ragdoll Kitten

Do you have any fun adoption stories to share?

Yes. Actually, there was a family who came and bought a kitten from us 2 years ago. Their eldest daughter desperately wanted a kitten for her 10th birthday. And they have just been back to pick up a second new family member. Another of the kids has now had their 10th birthday and had asked for a Cherishme kitten too.

What makes this kitten or cat “pet quality” or “show quality”?

Individual markings and overall body shape, tail length etc. The nature of a particular kitten can be quite different too. Even though Ragdolls are generally all very loving and placid. Some are definitely more so than others. Quite obviously though, many show quality kittens are still desexed and placed in loving pet homes.

Do you keep some of your cats for your own?

Of course. It is a great honour showing cats that you have bred yourself and having them do well. The hardest part is letting any of them go to their new homes though, we spend so much time with them in the 3 mths before they are ready to be independent little cats for their new families. But to see the joy that they bring their new owners is how we can get through it.

CherishMe Ragdolls Sugar

What is your favorite Ragdoll look?

ahhh… as far as colour & pattern goes, I really love my mitted cats. But a well marked bicolour has a very splendid regal look too though. As far as colour….. I love them all. From the soft grey tones of the lilac & blues, to the rusty reds, to the dark brown colours of the seals.

May I speak with three people that own your cats?

But of course. Having placed kittens in homes all around Australia, I have no hesitation in giving details of any of them. I can’t post comments from everyone, but have a page on my website with the latest photos that some of our kitten owners have sent in.

Do you raise your cats underfoot?

Definitely. The more contact that they have in everyday household noise and interaction the better. We are lucky to be able to have designated rooms to allow the mums to have their babies in peace and quiet. Once the kittens have opened their eyes and are moving about, then we relocate the family to our living room where they get constant attention by our whole family.

How long have you been breeding Ragdolls?

I first got registered as a Ragdoll breeder with the QFA in early 2009, and when my daughter Emily turned 18 in September 2010 we got registered as partners in Saffireblu. We had our first 2 litters in May 2010 as we bought most of our Ragdoll Kings and Queens as kittens, so we had a little bit of a wait to start with. Since then we have had 6 beautiful litters of kittens with more on the way! We just love every minute of it.

How did you pick Ragdolls to breed?

Saffireblu Ragdoll

We first came across the Ragdoll when visiting my sister in law, she had a beautiful Cream point boy called Jasper, he was absolutely massive and we were blown away by his size, his stunning blue eyes and his gentle temperament. We had never really been ‘cat people’ as we never had the luxury of owning one. Since we met the Ragdoll, we have been hooked. Some people may even say we are crazy cat ladies…

Do you show? Why or why not?

Yes we love to show our cats! It is always a great day out and it is wonderful to start getting some feedback on our babies, to see if we are meeting the breed standard and doing the Ragdoll breed justice.

What congenital defects are in Ragdolls?

Saffireblu Ragdolls

Some congenital defects associated with the Ragdoll are Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) & Polycystic Kidney disease (PKD.)

How are you breeding to avoid those defects?

We DNA test all of our Kings & Queens before we breed them to make sure that they are negative for these congenital defects, so that our kittens have the cleanest bill of health we can possibly give them. We are also in the process of testing our breeding Ragdolls for FIV & FeLV (Feline immunodeficiency virus and Feline Leukaemia), we are over half way there and all cats have negative results so far. This takes a lot of time and money on our part, but it is worth it for the peace of mind, knowing that all of our cats are as healthy as can be.

How large is your breeding operation?

Saffireblu Ragdoll

We only operate a small scale Ragdoll breeding program, this is so that we can devote all the time we need to into our cats, and properly socialise our kittens so that they are ready to be the perfect family pet. However, due to the Ragdoll’s addictive nature the size of our operation may change, we just fall in love with them all!

Where do your cats spend most of their time?

Our cats spend most of their time in the home with us, we have our Queens and kittens in the house all the time, and the Kings have their own area on the patio where we spend a lot of time with them too. We are moving house in a weeks time, so we will be building lots more stimulating enclosures so that our cats can enjoy the taste of the world outside, whilst being kept completely safe.

Do you breed full time? In other words, do you have another job?

Saffireblu Ragdoll

We are at home with our cats and kittens full time, so that we can give them the best start possible.

What sort of health guarantees do you offer?

We guarantee that all of our kittens are negative for common genetic faults, they are parasite free and as healthy as can be! We offer our customers 6 weeks free pet health insurance for their new kitten, covering illness and injury.

What happens if the kitten gets sick?

If any of our kittens were to become sick, we would always be there to help them no matter what age they are. When our kittens are still growing up with us, we are very careful and cautious about their health, so they get vet checked regularly, fed extra supplements, and wrapped in cotton wool! After our kittens go home, we are still there to help the kitten and owner for the rest of their lives!

Do you have any fun adoption stories to share?

Saffireblu Ragdolls

Yes we do! There are lots of lovely stories from our kitten owners, but the one that stands out for us is Saffireblu Lovely Jubbly ‘Paganini’. Pags went to live in Melbourne with Georgie and her family, Georgie is an orchestral violinist and she also teaches primary school aged children how to play the violin. Paganini greets every student at the door, he comments on their work with a meow, and he keeps the violin cases warm for the children while they play. Lovely Jubbly just seemed to be the perfect fit for the family, after the unfortunate loss of one of their previous beloved cats. Pags made them fall in love all over again, and he behaves like Royalty. He demands to be hand-fed ‘Premium Chicken breast’ (for the kids sandwiches) from little Mia, and they just love each other – Georgie says it is almost embarrassing! We love this story because Pags has the most wonderful nature and he helped mend some broken hearts.

What makes this kitten or cat “pet quality” or “show quality”?

Saffireblu Ragdoll Kitten Midnight at 7weeks

Show quality kittens usually have to have a great size and boning with a floppy nature, and also near perfect markings. The most important thing about a pet quality kitten is the temperament, so that they can be a sociable & affectionate family pet!

Do you keep some of your cats for your own?

How can we not? They are all beautiful and it is always very hard to part with any of them!

What is your favorite Ragdoll look?

We are in love with the Tabby/Lynx markings especially as it adds so much character to the face, we also love the points and bicolours, and the mitteds. Oh no. We love them all.

May I speak with three people that own your cats?

Of course, we have now successful raised and homed a lot of healthy and happy kittens of since mid 2010, so we have some very happy families that you are most welcome to talk to.

Do you raise your cats underfoot?

Of course! All kittens are raised in our home with us so that we can keep them happy & healthy & smothered with cuddles, and they can keep us entertained!

GuysnDolls is a small exclusive, in home, cattery, based North of Brisbane. We are registered breeders with the Queensland Feline Association, No. 882.

Our babies are all born and raised in our home, in their very own nursery. Which has their own whelping box, bunny rugs, heating pad, lots and lots of toys and their own little scratching posts.

Once our babies are big enough and out of their whelping boxes, they then come out and join the rest of our home, taking over and having the run of the house, sleeping with us, watching TV with us, being one of us, a precious part of our family.

This prepares them beautifully for their new homes, making them very social and giving them plenty of confidence.

GuysnDolls babies are available for their new homes at 12-14 weeks, to approved, forever, INDOOR homes ONLY. They will be registered with the Queensland Feline Association, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated twice, wormed regularly and kitty litter trained.

Our gorgeous kittens are available to go to their new homes from 12 weeks of age. They will be vet checked, desexed, vaccinated twice, litter box trained, wormed and registered with GCCFSA. Pedigree papers will be mailed to you from GCCFSA. Our kittens will come with 6 weeks accident and illness insurance cover from petplan. They also come with a kitten pack containing food samples (Kitten packs will only be given to kittens collected from our home). Our kittens will ONLY be sold to kind, loving indoor homes.

We feed our kittens Royal Canin Baby Cat 34 dry food plus a variety of human grade meats including chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, kangaroo and also the following wet foods – Advance kitten super premium food for kitten growth, Iams kitten chicken in gravy, Hills Science Diet kitten tender chunks in gravy in beef and chicken, Royal Canin kitten Instinctive and Fancy Feast Kitten.
Interview with Debbie Le-Strange of GUYSNDOLLS Ragdolls

Floppycats.com did an Interview with Debbie Le-Strange of GUYSNDOLLS Ragdolls. Debbie Le-Strange is owner and operator of GUYSNDOLLS Ragdolls in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Her phone is 07 5495 5260. Her website is www.guysndollsragdolls.com.

How long have you been breeding Ragdolls?
I started breeding Ragdolls in 1997, but due to a devastating experience and losing my female Ragdoll before she was 12 months of age, I then stopped and started again, after a lot of research into pedigrees and lines, in 2005.

How did you pick Ragdolls to breed?
I wanted a cat that would be happy to be inside with me and be my companion and want lots of love and cuddles. I first saw the Ragdoll cats on Burkes Backyard and that was it, I fell in love with them straight away and just had to have a Ragdoll in my life. That was definitely the best day of my life.

Do you show? Why or why not?
Yes I do show, occasionally, as I enjoy the day out with my Ragdolls.

What congenital defects are in Ragdolls?
The congenital defects that you can find in Ragdolls are HCM and PKD.

How are you breeding to avoid those defects?
DNA testing is the best way to make sure that you do not have these problems in your breeding.

How large is your breeding operation?
I am only a small breeding program, as this makes sure that I have all the time that I need to have to spend quality time with each and every litter that is born. I love spending time watching my babies grow and develop, especially watching them play and the funny little things that they get up to as they grow. I wouldnt want to miss any of it, not for a minute.

Where do your cats spend most of their time?
My Ragdolls spend their time in our home with us, there is only my husband and myself now, and my Ragdolls are our children and a very important part of our family.

Do you breed full time? In other words, do you have another job?
Oh I most definately I breed full time, I am a 24/7 stay at home mum, to my Ragdolls of course. I wouldnt have it any other way.

What sort of health guarantees do you offer?
I offer 12 month genetic health cover with all of my babies.

What happens if the kitten gets sick?
I am here for the life of my kittens and for any problems that may occur with them at anytime.

Do you have any fun adoption stories to share?
I have a lot of really wonderful stories about my adoption families, but one that really stands out is a family that came to me to see if I would allow them to adopt one of my Ragdoll babies. A lady came and her son, he was 8 and autistic, he had not put a sentence together at all and just used to sit and stare, until he came to see my cats, he didnt stop talking from the time he arrived until they left, his mother couldnt believe what she was seeing. They took home a blue lynx point female baby, and she goes into bed with him every night, waits until he falls asleep, and then goes into bed with the mother.
Just gorgeous!

What makes this kitten or cat “pet quality” or “show quality”?
The difference between a pet quality and a show quality comes down to the finer points of a Ragdoll, markings, type etc., but I prefer my babies to go to loving pet homes where they will be in the home being loved and spoilt and cared for as they should be, for the rest of their lives.

Do you keep some of your cats for your own?
Most definately. The hardest part is parting with my babies, but unfortunately we cannot keep them all, so some very lucky families get to experience the joy of being owned by a Ragdoll, just as we do.

What is your favorite Ragdoll look?
I love all of my Ragdolls and all of the colours and patterns, but I think that my favourite colour is the Blues, and I still have a soft spot for the points.

May I speak with three people that own your cats?
I have a long list of people who have adopted my babies, and any prospective adoptive parents are more than welcome to speak with any one of my adoptive parents about my Ragdoll babies that they have adopted.

Do you raise your cats underfoot?
Oh yes! My cats and babies are raised in our home, as part of our family.
